NordVPN is a provider of virtual private network (VPN) services that offer desktop applications for Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as mobile applications for Android and iOS. NordVPN also provides an application for AndroidTV, along with the option for manual configuration of wireless routers, NAS devices, and other platforms. The company is based in Panama due to the country's lack of laws requiring mandatory data retention, and its non-membership in the "Five Eyes" or "Fourteen Eyes" alliances. Established in 2012 by "four childhood friends," as stated on the official website, NordVPN introduced an Android application at the end of May 2016, followed by an iOS application in June of the same year. In October 2017, the company launched a Google Chrome browser extension, while in June 2018, it rolled out an Android TV application. As of October 2019, NordVPN owned over 5,200 servers across 62 countries. NordVPN directs all user internet traffic through a remote server controlled by the service, thereby masking their IP addresses and encrypting all incoming and outgoing data. NordVPN's applications use OpenVPN and Internet Key Exchange v2/IPsec technologies for encryption. In addition to general-purpose VPN servers, NordVPN offers servers designed for specific use cases including P2P file sharing, double encryption, and connection to the anonymous Tor network.
