Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger founded Instagram, an American social network for sharing photos and videos. In April 2012, Facebook Inc. (now Meta) acquired the service for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock. Users can upload media files to the app, which they can edit with filters and organize using hashtags and geotags. Users can share messages publicly or with pre-approved subscribers. They can also view other users' content by tags and location, as well as view trending materials. To add content to their personal feed, users can like photos and follow other users. Starting on August 26, 2015, Instagram introduced the ability for users to add photos and videos with landscape and portrait orientations without cropping them into a square shape. Previously, Instagram had allowed users to take square-shaped photos (similar to instant cameras like Polaroid, Kodak Instamatic, and medium-format cameras). The service also added messaging features, the ability to include multiple images or videos in one message, and a "Stories" feature similar to its main competitor Snapchat. The Stories feature allows users to post photos and videos in a sequential feed, with each message available to other users for 24 hours. As of January 2019, 500 million users use the Stories feature daily.
