Hotmail (previously known as HoTMaiL, MSN Hotmail, and Windows Live Hotmail) was a closed email service that was part of the Windows Live and MSN services. It provided access through a web interface, POP3, DeltaSync, and Exchange ActiveSync. As one of the first free email services, by mid-2012 it was the world's largest email service. On April 3, 2013, the Hotmail email service was closed and users were offered the option to switch to Outlook.com. The idea for web-based email belonged to Jack Smith, while Sabir Bhatia prepared the business plan. The commercial operation under the brand name "HoTMaiL" began on July 4, 1996, Independence Day in the United States, symbolizing freedom from internet service providers. The service was acquired by Microsoft Corporation in 1997 for approximately $400 million, according to various estimates, and soon after was renamed "MSN Hotmail". The "Windows Live Hotmail" service was announced on November 1, 2005. A beta version was released to several thousand testers, and enthusiasts who wanted to try the updated version of web-based email could request an invitation for access. By the end of 2006, the number of beta testers had reached about one million people. The new service was written from scratch and emphasized three main concepts: "Faster, Simpler, and Safer." Microsoft also planned to abandon the Hotmail brand in favor of "Windows Live Mail," but due to numerous user requests, they soon returned to the familiar Hotmail brand and renamed the service to "Windows Live Hotmail." The updated email service was launched in April 2007, replacing MSN Hotmail.
